RE: The tariff classification of a USB cable from China

Dear Mr. Yeh:

In your letter dated August 10, 2011, you requested a tariff classification ruling.

The merchandise concerned is a Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0 data cable, model # MV9MDATA. This particular cable incorporates a standard USB connector on one end and a micro USB connector on the other end. The submitted literature states that this cable weighs 0.8 ounces and is 3 feet in length.

This cable is used to connect select Motorola phones to a personal computer. The cable facilitates the transfer of data to and from the computer.

The applicable subheading for the USB 2.0 data cable, model # MV9MDATA will be 8544.42.2000, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS), which provides for "Insulated wire, cable …: Other electric conductors, for a voltage not exceeding 1,000V: Fitted with connectors: Other: Of a kind used for telecommunications." The rate of duty will be free.

This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Part 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).
